There seem to be some kind of problem with overriding the default CSS when using the Deco theme. I copied the nice_menus_default.css and tried just to edit the background color and changed the path under themes/configure/global settings. The menu gets messed up and looses all borders, background, etc.
I also tried just copying the nice_menus_default.css and just renaming it without changes, but the same problem occured.

I can't replicate this problem. Using Deco and Nice Menus, I copied the nm default CSS with no changes into my Deco theme folder (with the name mymenus.css) and set the path to it (sites/all/themes/deco/mymenus.css). This resulted in no change at all for the menus - they still worked and looked like a default install. Then I changed the ul.nice-menu li background-color to red and that worked fine, no broken menus (although the menuparents didn't change color cuz their CSS is further down in the file and I didn't bother changing that too.)

It sounds like the file path you are setting for your custom CSS file is not correct. Where is the custom CSS located and what path are you putting in?

Something must have been wrong with my path, works fine now!

Title: Problem with custom CSS and Deco theme » custom CSS and any theme on rc2

No combination of enabled themes allows me to load a custom css for nice menus. When I save, the url just disappears. And the url is checked as valid.

If the URL is disappearing, that was a problem in the Nice Menus BETA that is now fixed in RC1. Please make sure you are using Nice Menus RC1.
