When I import the templates to NB (6.91) it warns me about over writing the existing templates and that I should save the existing ones first. But the selection for PHP templates was grayed out in the export dialogue box. So I just went ahead and imported the Drupal templates. Then I noticed most but not all of the original PHP templates were still there in addition to the new Drupal ones, but at least one line in the PHP category (cln) got lost. It seemed identical to (cls) however, which stayed. Weird.

How do you safely merge templates and why couldn't I export the originals?

It's duplicated, the other issue is closed: #1044708: Template in PHP > Drupal 5 not in general PHP
