I am looking for a solution to play audio samples. How could this module fit in? I don't know what would be required. Perhaps a configuration option for max play length?

I believe that would have to be handled by the player itself and not this module. Some players support this and others don't as far as I can tell from the 1pixelout player blog/site, this don't.

Yeah unfortunately the WP Audio Player doesn't support this. You'll have to look into other players or chopping down the MP3s yourself.
