having the image display 'automatically' via the theme layer is actually a feature request. the module as-is, works as i designed it.
in use on: http://engineering.temple.edu/department/electrical-computer-engineering ('grid' at bottom generated by menu items that are children of that page, and their images.)
the module readme / documentation explains how to access/use the image 'attached' to the menu item.
