I have a site that uses the Forum module and don't see the behavior in your image. You will have to give more details for me to reproduce. Did you try to activate the "Advanced forum" module too and see what that does?

The forum module has it's own styles in modules/forum/forum.css and Mayo really has never tried to style the forum module. I can see it does not work too great in Tablet and Smalltouch. There are 3,500 users of the responsive version of Mayo right now and you are the first to mention this problem. I would need to see a lot more demand for a solution to invest the time right now to work on this.
