Looking at the tpl.php files, page.tpl.php in particular, these have far more PHP code in them that is recommended. As much code as possible should be placed in template preprocess functions in template.php, leaving tpl files to just have print statements and if {} blocks and foreach loops if needed.

This makes them easier to use, and helps with performance.

The way suggested is correct, but it's been that way since the original developer coded it 4 years ago. I just haven't made time to improve it and now I'm trying to get Mayo ready for Drupal 8. Marking it Postponed and hoping to work on it at some future date. This problem won't exist in Mayo 8.x-1.x.
