To everyone interested in this project,

After years of inactivity, an updated plan for this module is exposed below. You can read the full plan below.

Everyone is welcome to help. If you want to join as a maintainer, that's great.

I am ready to put a lot of my own time into this work. To make sure we work well together as a team, I ask that any new maintainer agrees with the plan above and wants to work toward the same goals.

To provide clarity and allow time for feedback, I will wait 2 weeks from the date of this announcement. After this period, if no further communication has been received, I will consider this plan as accepted by all involved parties and will begin active development according to the outlined roadmap.

If you like this plan and want to help build it, please join us.

Overview

The Map module provides a lightweight, yet powerful, solution for integrating an interactive, public-facing map into any Drupal website. It moves beyond simple embed codes by offering a dedicated, intelligent localisation page. This page acts as a "find us" mini-application, offering visitors clear geographical context and practical journey-planning information directly from your site.

Core Philosophy

* Seamless Integration: Built with Drupal core's principles in mind, utilising core systems for location data, configuration management, and theming where possible.
* Simplicity First: A straightforward installation and setup process, requiring minimal technical knowledge to achieve a professional result.
* Visitor-Centric Utility: Provides genuine value to site visitors by answering "Where are you?" and "How do I get to you?" in a single, interactive view.

 Key Features

* Public Map Page: Automatically provides a clean, themable page at the path `/map`. This page is accessible to all visitors.
* Administrative Settings: A dedicated configuration page within the Drupal admin area for setting the map's parameters without touching code.
*    Smart Location Discovery:
    * Primarily uses the site's own address or coordinates defined within the module's settings.
    * Can optionally fall back to relevant location data from the Drupal core system configuration (if available).
* Interactive Points of Interest (POIs): Displays key local landmarks, amenities, or partner locations near your site. POIs are configurable by the site administrator.
* Transport & Hub Integration: The map intelligently includes and labels major transport interchanges relevant to the site's location, such as:
    *   Mainline railway stations
    *   Key bus/coach stations
    *   Nearest airports
    * Proximity to major motorways (with junction information where practical)

 Technical Approach

* Utilises a modern, lightweight JavaScript mapping library (e.g., Leaflet) for maximum compatibility and performance.
* Adheres to Drupal coding standards and best practices.
* Designed with extensibility in mind, allowing for future sub-modules or integration with other contrib modules (e.g., for custom POI types or advanced routing).

 Use Cases

* Business & Retail Websites: Allow customers to find your physical premises easily.
* Event Sites: Show the event location in relation to transport links.
* Cultural Institutions (Museums, Galleries, Theatres): Enhance visitor planning.
* Any organisation with a physical presence that wishes to provide superior accessibility information.

 The `-dev` branch on Drupal.org will contain the latest development version. Stable releases will be tagged and published for production use.
