zyxware commentedWell mailq could help you do that. All you have to do would be to set batch size in mailq configuration to within the gmails limits and then set cron to run in such a way as to never exceed the limit set by gmail.
Also do try out the latest latest release - http://drupal.org/node/1333638. You will have to uninstall the existing module and install the new version as there is no upgrade path as it is.
BTW how do you use gmail? Using smtp module?

im pretty fed up with gmail google apps though many sent emails will be blocked delivery by gmail google. Also they will lock up an account if you send to many emails (even within their guidlines) and not tell you why.
