izmeez commentedI am not a maintainer of the location module and may not be understanding your question completely.
I have been looking at different options for maps besides Google maps. The option that looks most interesting at the moment is the mapstraction module which doesn't yet have support for all features but allows switching map service providers and includes Openlayers as a provider. And the other option is of course the Openlayers module.
I have not yet tested how each of these work with location.

craigkitterman commentedThere is a new Bing Maps module for Drupal released by MindTree. I have created a quick tutorial video at http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/Interoperability. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

benjf commentedHere's a simple patch that adds Bing as an option under "Location" -> "Map Links". (Just for the US, this patch. And I didn't exactly pore over the terms of use, since I'm not embedding their service, just linking to it.)
Any feedback appreciated - either legal or technical!
