FYI, just experimenting w/the location_cck module, I had to reinstall the location and location_cck modules in order to delete a location field. It should do this in the uninstall hook. Fortunately, it was throwing inactive field error messages, otherwise I wouldn't have thought to check the database tables.

#3 is on the money. I also tried to uninstall but couldn't uninstall the Location CCK component.

Running CRON allowed me to uninstall as normal.
