3th party widgets can cause a huge performance hit. In order to improve the performance, some sites - like Mashable - will load the widget on mouseover. A 'dummy' widget is included in the page HTML, with the counts loaded on the server via a 3th party API. The lazyloaded module brings this functionality to Drupal.
Currently supported widgets are Twitter tweet, Facebook like and Google +1. This module is a work in progress and we are working to make the whole system more flexible.
Roadmap
- Implement widgets as fields.
- Split module into a framework module and a 'lazyloaded social' module.
