i would be cool to have the player play without seeing it.. so that it could be used to play background music.

i tried wrapping field with a display:none and for some odd reason the player won't play if i do this.

and ideally, it would be nice to just have different skins and for what i need a very simple skin which simply exposes the mute button.

You can over ride the skin tpl.php. Have you tried visibility:none?

Another option is to set height and width to 0px and set overflow to hidden.
