Currently all of the tags are on the HEAD/MAIN code which makes it harder to maintain the 5.x branch.

I think the code should be branched so that the 5.x branch can be properly maintained.

If you'd like to add me as a co-maintainer I can help do that more directly or I'd also be happy to answer any questions on the topic.

Also, http://drupal.org/node/193520/cvs-instructions/HEAD has some great advice.

I guess an alternative is just to stop maintaining the 5.x code.
