I'll look into it once D8 is final. Media is one of the D8 initiatives that is still being worked on http://2013.badcamp.net/sprints/media-sprint thus working on this now would be a moving target. Getting something like what this module does into core would be ideal.

#2257163 is postponed to 8.1.x. Was it a blocker or a nice to have thing?

Media is out! There is also a blog post that suggests a blanket generation approach that could be helpful to get started here:
