API for inserting Images

Hi,

i would like to port the imagefield module of the feed element mapper from Drupal 5.x to D6. alex_b gave it a shot, but with the port of imagefield to a filefield widget the imagefield_file_insert is not the same.

The question is: Is there any function where i can throw some file description and the path in the local file system in and that image is added to the node?

Perhaps i can get into it, if someone points me the way.
