I was wondering if there was a way to integrate the imagefield module into a module i'm developing.
Currently I have the install file just inserting a few records but i'm seriously doubting integrity of this method.

Any help/ideas?

Probably not. ImageField is extremely coupled with CCK and will not operate in custom modules. Since ImageField was never meant to be used outside of CCK, I'm marking won't fix.
