I have had a request to allow uploading of images from a URL rather than only the user's computer. At this point they copy the file to their computer then upload it.

Has anyone else done this? Any suggestions on how to go about it? Is this a feature ImageField could use?

No one has done this for imagefield yet. No idea on how to go at it from the technical side. Yes, this is a feature that people would love to have, see the existing issue #85464: Use image from arbitrary filepath or URL. I'm marking this one as duplicate.
