The result is pretty good when the overlay template is pretty similar in size and shape to the desired result, but may start to look warped if you are trying to produce effects at bigger (or smaller) sizes.
I suggest it wouldn't be too hard to get the middle (second) slice to optionally repeat instead of deform to fill the space it needs to fill.
eg, if you wanted a result like (but better than) this clipart

then warping/stretching would be wrong.

I'll play with that idea. I suspect it won't look good in most cases because the squares, while nicely repeated through the middle, won't match up at the corners then.
