I might be overlooking something, but I have image nodes that have extra cck fields. When submitting the image these fields are apparently not remembered (although it worked in one of the previous version -> see this issue http://drupal.org/node/292434). But more importantly, when I go to the image node to set those fields I don't have the node submit button, only the FUpload buttons.

Please provide a screenshot. But I don't get this behaviour, I tried all possible cases, but I can't find the problem you have.
All CCK Fields (NodeReference,...) are sent to server without any problems. By the way, I didn't do any modifications to image module concerning to this case. That's very strange.
Additionally, I don't get any fupload buttons when I visit "node/123/edit".

Perhaps, you should clear all caches (menu_router, too --> devel module) and disable & enable again all modules of image fupload. You should know, there's no upgrade path for devel version at the moment.
Please provide a list of all modules which are responsible for content manipulations.

you were right, completely removed fupload and reinstalled and working perfectly now :-).
