Everything appears to work fine, except the messages don't make it through to the recipient. Sounds for when someone comes online, or sends a message do not work either. Can see friend list, click on them to initiate a chat, type text, it jumps up to the conversation window as expected, but simply never makes it to the recipient. Please help!

Did you set permissions? You must set permission "IM Talk" for authenticated user.

Not sure about sounds... make sure that you

  1. download the (2k) file as described on the IM project page
  2. define which sounds to play for which events on the admin/settings/im page
