When using i18n_menu_select, editing content in another language than the current language will still add the language tags to the query, removing the preset link from the select.
After saving you have lost the link.

I've edited the code to only be active on node/add url's but thats not the perfect fix

Not sure about this module here, and this issue is also pretty old. Sure you are using everything correct?
Why do you need this backwards compatibility module?
-> (Unsupported module, only for backwards compatibility)

Closing it for now.

But this issue is so old, I dont have a clue what project I encountered/need this
