I have the library places in sites/all/libraries/gitphp; however, I'm getting the warning that the library isn't installed. I already changed the libraries permissions to 777.

Is there a specific version of PHP and/or the Git.php library I should be using?

Looks like it was the PHP version. The library works with PHP 5.6 not 7.1.

hmm... not seeing that in PHP 7 stacks tho I'm not on 7.1 so it's possible

I'll close this, because I eventually got this working with PHP 7.1. It may have tried initially on 7.2, but I don't recall.
