Problem/Motivation
Generator Engine currently needs additional security-focused test coverage to ensure that generated content, users, taxonomy terms, configuration, and other generated entities cannot introduce unintended security issues.
The goal of this issue is to review the module's security-sensitive functionality and add automated test coverage for the relevant security scenarios.
This is particularly important because Generator Engine can create Drupal entities and accept generation parameters from different entry points, including the administrative UI, configuration, Drush commands, and other supported interfaces.
Proposed resolution
Review the module against Drupal's security best practices and add automated test coverage where appropriate.
The security review should cover, at minimum:
- Access control and permissions for generator operations.
- Administrative routes and forms.
- Form API validation and CSRF protection.
- Validation and sanitization of user-provided generation parameters.
- Entity creation and field-value handling.
- User creation and account-related operations.
- Taxonomy term creation.
- File/media generation and file handling, where applicable.
- Protection against unintended access to generated content.
- Drush command access and validation.
- Configuration handling.
- Prevention of unsafe or unexpected entity/property values.
- Appropriate use of Drupal APIs instead of direct database or unsafe operations.
- Security-sensitive error handling and logging.
Automated test coverage
Add PHPUnit/Drupal Kernel or Functional tests as appropriate to verify the identified security scenarios.
Tests should verify both:
- Expected behavior for authorized and valid requests.
- Rejection/failure of unauthorized, invalid, or unsafe requests.
Where applicable, tests should specifically verify that:
- Users without the required permission cannot execute generation operations.
- CSRF-protected forms reject invalid requests.
- Invalid generation parameters are rejected safely.
- Generated entity values are properly validated.
- Generated users cannot unintentionally receive elevated privileges.
- Generated content does not bypass Drupal access-control mechanisms.
- File-related generation does not allow unsafe file paths or extensions.
- Drush commands enforce the appropriate access/validation rules.
- Security-sensitive functionality behaves consistently across supported entry points.
Security considerations
This issue is intended as a proactive security-hardening and test-coverage improvement.
The objective is not to identify or disclose a specific vulnerability, but to increase automated coverage around security-sensitive functionality and reduce the possibility of regressions.
If the review identifies an actual vulnerability, it should be handled according to Drupal's security advisory process rather than disclosed through this issue.
Remaining tasks
- Review Generator Engine security-sensitive functionality.
- Identify missing security test coverage.
- Add automated tests.
- Verify permissions and access control.
- Verify form validation and CSRF protection.
- Verify entity and field-value validation.
- Verify user/account generation security.
- Verify file/media handling where applicable.
- Run the complete test suite.
- Run Drupal coding standards/static analysis.
- Review the changes and merge the MR.
