It seems that the default breadcrumb on the front page has a label of "Content" is there a way to change this without a string override or hacking the core of the theme?

Not sure about this one without looking at the HTML source for it. The breadcrumbs shouldn't be displaying on the homepage by default so it should only show on the sub-pages. Can we see a screenshot of the HTML source for that area with the "Content" text?

fixed, I am using menu breadcrumb and I had to check the box for:

Hide the breadcrumb if the breadcrumb only contains the link to the front page.
Choose whether or not the breadcrumb should be hidden if the breadcrumb only contains a link to the front page (Home.).

??

this was actually an issue with the menu breadcrumb module. Sorry about that.
