By default Drupal prints .breadcrumb and in some themes such as this one we are wrapping the breadcrumbs in a div which is #breadcrumbs. So you have an id wrapping a class as it is needed sometimes and gives us more control over the layout, positioning, and styling of the breadcrumb area.
