Currently the core flood module supports database (and memory for testing), but more exists already. The Redis and CouchBase modules implement a flood storage instance and support for memcache is pending (at least partially).
And more work is underway in other modules, so i wonder if it would be possible for fbip to support multiple storage backends. (note) Works is planned in #2928007: Support external Flood (Redis, etc.) to get support for flood_unblock underway for this, might help / inspire / etc at some point with implementing support in fbip.
