A tutorial based on this example is in the works.

Can this code be integrated into facetapi, or linked to on facetapi's page/documentation?

This is excellent! I will link to the module on the project page. I will try to look it over in more detail once I have a little bit of extra time. Right now, unfortunately, I do not :-)

I added the tutorial in the module. I think the best place for it would be in the documentation pages for facet API, once it has been reviewed.

I don't think that makes sense to spend the time to include this tutorial in the module. But the link to the example is already added to the page of the module. I think it's enough for a D7 version of the module.
