Nodereference instead of taxonomy

I'm converting my site from using taxonomy to store community names to using nodereference back to a community node. I would love to have a way to automatically "tag" news feed items with the community they belong to.

I realize this is totally out of scope for this module and am not asking you to write it for me but I'd appreciate any pointers you could give me.
