With the upcome of mobile devices, I am looking for NOT using modal frames.
I would like an option for this module to either embed the views widget or to redirect to the views page and return to the edit page.

Never.
7.x-1.x embedded the views widget and it required a ton of hacks, stayed in alpha because of neverending bugs.
You are free to try to use 7.x-1.x and submit patches to stabilize it, but you will find that it is impossibly hard.
