Seems like a selection of at least one item is required, because it is not possible to save a new node without a selection (empty field).

Same problem? Selection must be an array which is not the case when its empty. Must be a way to check if the selection is empty and insert an empty array...
Above my skill level but I will make a try if no one else can do a patch.
