I tried cloning the repo, but it is empty. Any tips?

This worked.
git clone --branch 7.x-1.x http://git.drupal.org/sandbox/jsacksick/1301456.git entityreference_backreference

The master branch is empty, you have to use the 7.x-1.x branch

git clone --branch master http://git.drupal.org/sandbox/jsacksick/1301456.git entityreference_backreference
cd entityreference_backreference 
git checkout 7.x-1.x

Or

git clone --branch 7.x-1.x http://git.drupal.org/sandbox/jsacksick/1301456.git entityreference_backreference
cd entityreference_backreference
