Looks fantastic by the description, looks like a taxonomy killer? The performance issues would be nonexistant vis a vis the old taxonomy module.

I don't see how this could even theoretically compete with taxonomy. Taxonomy provides form elements, admin pages, content listings, freetagging, similar terms, etc. pp.
It would rather be overlapping with book, if at all. But this here is an API module, I don't think it's meant as a replacement for book.

As I understand taxonomy helps put content in a tree hierarchy.

Taxonomy does much more, and comes complete with a user interface. This module is an API to put entities in a directed acyclic graph.

With UI, related terms, free tagging, ways to retrieve and display siblings and content listings to browse the graph, yes, it could perhaps become a competitor.
