Is it at all possible to allow for the customer to stay on the drupal site and complete the transaction process?

Unfortunately, it is not.
Don't know if it is due to restrictions in SA or because the companies that do provide gateways don't want to risk the liability but it seems a trend here to do the transactions on their sites.
At least the drupal site is notified about the outcome of the transaction and the orders are updated appropriately.

Yes I agree 7 months is possibly not the kind of response time that is acceptable, there are other ways to contact people on d.o. I'm thinking: contact if enabled, for example.

Yes this module can be ported to ubercart, Developing a VCS module for Ubercart, and there are a lot of people who are requesting this.
We should probably implement a bounty for this effort, would you be interested in funding a part of this development?
