Watchdog shows errors for favicon.ico all the time with the path:
domainname/favicon.ico
The drupal icon is in the /misc folder so the favicon.ico path should be:
domainname/misc/favicon.ico
When I uploaded my favicon.ico through the settings page, I constantly had watchdog error that it couldn't find theme-iconname.ico
I've modified the page.tpl.php so that I can use my own filename for a png file:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/misc/baseball.png" />
My custom icon does appear, but I'm still getting the watchdog error about favicon path as stated above.

nancydruI'm actually still frequently seeing this in 5.x (at least 5.9). I haven't paid attention to 6.x.

pasquallehere is the fix: #174940: Root /favicon.ico accounts for majority of 'Page not found' errors
but I doubt that it will be backported to 4.7
