(flagged "Component: other" as I'm not sure which component is involved)

While trying to use format_date in a custom template following the guidelines from http://api.drupal.org/api/drupal/includes--common.inc/function/format_date I can't manage to get the localization working.
With the Italian localization correctly installed, enabled and set to default (large parts of Drupal are in Italian), I use this:
<?php print format_date($node->created, 'custom', 'j F Y', NULL, 'it') ?>
but the month name is still displayed in English.
Any hint?
