I'm using image module (6.x-1.0-beta3) for importing (uploading) images in different resolutions: original, thumbnail (80x80), preview (640x640), small (460x460) and medium (800x800). After import besides the original image I have 4 other derived images (with above resolutions) in the specified directory, but only the original image contains the IPTC tags I have added before importing (uploading) in Drupal.

It seems that the IPTC tags are not preserved (are removed) for the "derived" resolutions after image import.

I would expect that the image tags (IPTC/EXIF) are preserved for the "derived" images also. During import only resolutions should be changed according to the defined values under "Settings / Image" (I translated from German...).

Project: Image » Drupal core
Version: 6.x-1.0-beta3 » 6.x-dev
Component: image_import » image system

We use core's http://api.drupal.org/api/function/image_scale function -- moving this to core.

This is by design. None of the image conversion functions actually preserve EXIF tags. It would make very little sense to do so. By the way, this is consistent with what, for example, Flickr does.

There might be some use cases where preserving IPTC/EXIF tags is desired. I would like to use the IPTC tags to be shown during slideshow with Lightbox2 (probably by using some additional module which shows IPTC tags). But the tags are only present in original files and Lightbox2 shows shows the *.preview.jpg files having smaller resolution (and this makes sense in slideshows).

But the the IPTC tags are not present for this "derived" image after import.

Is it possible to offer an option during import: "preserve IPTC/EXIF tags: yes/no"?

I am sure that it would be useful in some cases.

See my previous comment. Is it possible to implement such option?

What you'd need to do for that use case is somehow have the data from the original image available to lightbox while it shows you the reduced size. I'm sure that's doable, just an awful lot of customization of image and lightbox and your theme.
