Just for cosmetic reasons, I’m looking for a way to get rid of “new” in the comment threads when new comments are present. If anyone can show me how to do this, I’d appreciate it.

it should be from comment.tpl.php - if your theme has one you can change it there (or create a subtheme in irder to not make changes to the existing theme). if not, copy the one from the comment module folder into your theme folder and edit it to your liking.
