I think it’s redundant to display a title in the comments and after all, I don’t allow the subject field when users post comments. How can I hide or get rid of the title in comment view?

Go to administration->content types, select your content type and click edit, scroll down to Comment setting-> Comment subject field, and select Disable.
I think this should do it.

I tried it because I don't allow users to create titles for comments yet the title still appears in comment view.

Ok, I now understand the problem completely. Sorry.

It seems that the subject field is necessary to provide permalinks to each comment. I found this issue: http://drupal.org/node/498154 and perhaps you can use this module to display an empty title: http://drupal.org/project/comment_subject
