I've thought about the way Drupal goes with D7 to D8 and had an Idea how Drupal could get way more user-friendly and still lose not complexity while it. I think that Distributions cold help, but also are making a lot of work and could become confusion (Which Distri should I choose?)

My Idea would be to develop a smarter Installer which supports Install-Profiles instead of many Distributions which came all itself customized. This could look something like that:

Choose your Drupal Profile:

- Minimal
- Standard (Recommended)
- Full
- Blog
- Community
- etc.

[Each Profile would have a Description and maybe an own Manual how you can configure Drupal to make a good Blog, etc. The profile would also make smart default-settings which makes it easier to start with it.]

Install Sample-Data?

- Yes / No

Drupal will install and download those Modules for you: (AJAX)

[Drupal gives an overview of modules that will be installed/activated. Some feature that would come very nice in here would be if Drupal could download and install the modules from the web. So the Drupal-Install-Package would ship with just the main- and necessary modules. ]

Select additional Modules

[Something like Firefox Addon-Library]
- Most popular
- Recommended
- ...

This are just some first thought about that, but in general i would love a Smart-installer like that. This is something no CMS i know have already and would be something exciting new.

I think this is mostly a duplicate of #395480: Plugin Manager in Core: Part 4 (installation profiles).

For a feature like "Install Sample Data", that's basically up to each individual profile whether that's something they want to support or not... And for the standard profile shipped with core, there is already an issue for that at #79582: Add example content to the experimental out-of-the-box demo install profile.
