Now that we have the overlay in core the edit node tab seems out of place.
When clicking on a tab I would expect the relative page to open in the same place not in a overlay.
What if we implement the node edit tab as an action link?

You should disable "Overlay" module.

You can disable Overlay module and download and install Administrator menu instead of overlay. So that page will open in same place.

yes Exactly what I was referring to download and install Administrator menu for D7 it will give you lot of options in admin menu with drop downs having sub menu hierarchy.
