Splitting this out from #723802: convert to sha-256 and hmac from md5 and sha1 so that it doesn't get munged together. I have yet to see a good explanation for why we should do this (lots of bad explanations, no good ones), but feel free to try to justify it if you can.

Subscribing. XML sitemap module hashes a serialized array to help index/find the correct database record. Wondering if I should switch to hash('crc32') or keep with md5() in Drupal 7.
