Hmmm... When I look at the source code for http://api.drupal.org/api/drupal/modules--field--field.crud.inc/7/source I can see field_update_instance() in there, but it is not showing up on the api.drupal.org page at all. I do not know why that is...

Ah, I see it! The doc comment for field_update_instance starts with

/*

rather than

/**

That should fix the problem. Just need a quick patch.

Here's a patch that fixes this doc header and another one or two that were also missing /**

It also brings doc one-line descriptions into compliance with current standards, for this file anyway.
