The current arrows in /misc that are used by SimpleTest and some stylesheets in core are quite outdated: See? This is sooooooo web 1.0.. Garland has neutral arrows that can blend in with pretty much every design: Say awe!.

I also suggest we rename the files to arrow-up.png, etc., because 1) the current names don't describe the images, but rather their intended use and 2) the images are being used for more than just menu items.

Garland arrows are 1bit GIFs and assume a white background. We can't use them directly. But maybe redo them as full alpha PNGs and drop IE6 support in Stark?

To illustrate, here is the same arrow on a slightly gray background:

Still a valid issue after the release of 7.0. Moving to 8.x.

Title: Replace menu icons in /misc with those of Garland » Modernize generic menu icons/arrows in /misc
Component: theme system » markup
Priority: Minor » Normal
Issue tags: -graphic design +html5, +Front end

Still an issue, I think.

What about adopting an existing icon font (with a compatible license) for all of Core's iconography? They have the following advantages:

- no dealing with sprites (and still a single http request)
- color can be easily changed
- scalable
- easy to vertically align within running text
- supported by all browsers

correcting the tag to the more common one.

changing the input format from full html to filtered html so other people can comment and edit this issue.
maybe the input format got messed up during the d.o drupal 6 to drupal 7 migration?

Icons have been updated in the issue #2032773: Use Libricons (icon font) in Seven, consider using it more broadly in core, so I'm closing this issue as a duplicate.
