There are currently "Path prefix only" and "Path prefix with language fallback" option to language negotiation, but there is no possibility to have domain name with language fallback. Unless there is a technical reason against it, it would be nice to have this option as well.

sittard commentedI think this would be a requirement for countries which have more than one language. I'm not 100% sure if this issue has been addressed in D7 but I believe this is one area that is being improved.

gábor hojtsyDrupal 6 is feature frozen and new language selection modes are not added. You can use the browser language negotiation mode and pre-feed a simulated browser language value in settings.php to get whatever language you want with your own criteria. Drupal 7 already has componentized language negotiation and you can configure the items and order of selections individually.
