Problem/Motivation

The text of the "Add" button and the dropdown in the section header on the view edit page has low contrast against their background.

WCAG SC 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) (Level AA)

The problems highlighted on the page

Major because contrast issues are supposed to be blockers for #3576488: [meta] Admin theme: path to beta and stable.

The light blue background also has a low contrast with the white page background (WCAG SC 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast (Level AA)). This may be a lower priority.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install with Standard profile.
  2. Log in as admin
  3. Go to /admin/structure/views.
  4. Edit the "Content" view.
  5. Run a test with Axe or Accessibility Insights browser extensions, or check the button text against the light blue background with a contrast checker such as WebAIM.
Expected

The text of the "Add" button and the dropdown against the light blue background has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1.

Actual

The text has insufficient contrast against the background (ratio on the WebAIM contrast checker: 4.27:1).

Proposed resolution

Use a darker blue such as --admin-color-primary-active.

Might need to be done in consideration with local task tabs, because their background color is similar and they also also fail contrast in multiple ways.

Opened an MR. It sets --admin-color-primary to --admin-color-primary-active inside .views-display-top, so the "Add" button and "Edit view name/description" dropdown now use the darker blue. Contrast improves from 4.31:1 to 5.53:1 (light mode). Dark mode still passes.
Local task tabs have the same problem on hover/focus (4.03:1). That can be handled here or in a follow-up.

the scope is too narrow, the issue is not only about the light blue accent color. i took a random sample just now (when i have the time and energy i will go through all the combinations a fourth time in the next days), the red accent color for example has the same problem in light mode against the background of the bulk action component (4,38:1). that is due to the design of the regular buttons which dont have a solid background but just a border and label in the accent color. that entails that every accent color has to have at least a color contrast of 4.5:1 at minimum against every available background color in light and dark mode. that is basically one of the two issues labeled as major over in the gin queue #3506316: [PP-1] Ensure that primary and secondary buttons have a high enough color contrast. Strictly speaking based on the time in the release cycle right before the release of 12.0 i would extend the scope for this issue to every accent color and label this critical instead of major and consider it a blocker.

@rkoller, there's another issue that covers assessing & fixing all the colors: #3619933: Drupal Admin Theme Colors.

I thought it would better and faster to fix the error that shows up in the default configuration first.

However, my intention with this issue was to find a better "blue" color combination overall rather than narrowly changing the color only for the header (thus the note in the IS about taking into consideration the local task tabs).

But since there's no such thing as a Default Admin stable blocker anymore, it does make sense to forgo this one in favor of a broader approach.

there are no more stable blockers.

I'm closing this as a duplicate because the goal of #3619933: Drupal Admin Theme Colors seems to be finding the right colors for all cases (including the default blue accent color).
