When the update status module is enabled, the Administer menu appears to hang. This gives the impression that the installation is unusable and must be reinstalled. In fact, with patience, the page may build after some minutes. Thus, if you are very persistent, you may be able to disable the module eventually. Other menus are unaffected.

This applies to a hosted website. A copy on my local machine does not have this problem.

As I recall, the update status module is enabled by default during installation and there is an amber warning in Status report that pushes you into enabling the module if it is not enabled. This means that if this problem could happen on your server, it almost certainly will.
