Using the "private download method" or the "private upload module" the uploaded files get the path /system/files/..... and are hidden for none authenticated users. That works fine for nodes but there is a problem downloading the uploaded files with Firefox

With Firefox (2.x or 3.x) uploaded files (PDF, jpg ....) are opened as text (no window appear). With IE it is OK.

private download method
http://www.mydomain.de/system/files/2008-08-08.pdf

private upload module
http://www.mydomain.de/system/files/private/2008-08-08.pdf

do you user linux or macOS with firefox? because I think the problem is with detect the mime type of the file sent in the browser...
