If I have an entityreference field, then I can set an entity on it rather than the ID, like this:

$entity->field = $another_entity;
$entity->save();

However, if I define a default callback for a field with FieldConfigInterface::setDefaultValueCallback(), and that callback returns an entity rather than an entity ID, then the storage crashes:

> Object of class ANOTHER_ENTITY could not be converted to string

Why does whatever magic happen when I set an entity not happen when that's the result of a default value callback?

I tested this using D9.4.x-dev and it is now possible to return an entity from a setDefaultValueCallback() function.

The same magic is now applied consistently everywhere.

So I think the issue is resolved.
