Hi there.

I'd like to add /register path alias but I get an error saying I don't have access. Which of course I don't since I'm loged in (admin group and user/1, too). If I log out, though, I, of course, cannot access /admin/build/pathauto...

Is there anything that can be done about this dilemma?

There is no /admin/build/pathauto and Pathauto doesn't handle individual creation of aliases. So, I guess this is really an issue with the Path module in Drupal core which is at /admin/build/path

Also, this seems like a duplicate of #236915: Cannot create path alias for 'user/login' which deals with user/login.
