turn on module "Search"
It right away show at Left sidebar
But into the Block it mark as =None=.
If then mark it as =Right sidebar=, then search-block show at 2 place instead 1, where it mark: Left sidebar and Right sidebar

Cobalt747@drupal.ru commentedVersion 5.7 has the same problem
Comment #2
gpk commentedsearch.module provides a "search box" to the theme (configured on the themes admin page) and the "search block" that is configured on the blocks admin page.
Could be considered a usability bug I guess, it did confuse me for a while!
dutsi commentedprint $search_box;Is being called in the left sidebar in the page.tpl.php file
Enjoy

Cobalt747@drupal.ru commentedOk, i have found that - it's settings, but it's not trivial!
I gather all my intuition for that.
I suggest make this option disable by default.

when editing block distribution, search box always appear on the left even when the left sidebar is empty, because is detecting variable $left as not empty (when in admin/build/block)
this is certainly confusing, because after applying an empty left sidebar the search box will appear in the right sidebar every page except admin/build/block
Comment #8
sunThe theme variable was already dropped in favor of the search block.
